When it comes to horror movies, there are few things that can truly scare the pants off of viewers. One of the biggest factors in determining whether a movie is scary or not is its villain.
In 2018, Sony Pictures released a movie called Venom, which was based on the Marvel Comics character of the same name. The question is, does Venom qualify as a scary movie? Let’s take a closer look.
Venom tells the story of Eddie Brock (played by Tom Hardy), an investigative journalist who ends up merging with an alien symbiote named Venom. Together, they must battle against a powerful businessman named Carlton Drake (played by Riz Ahmed) who wants to use the symbiotes for his own gain.
One of the key elements that makes a horror movie truly scary is the villain. In Venom, we have two villains: Carlton Drake and Riot (another symbiote). While both villains are certainly menacing, they don’t quite reach the level of some of the all-time great horror villains like Michael Myers or Freddy Krueger.
Drake is portrayed as a power-hungry businessman who will stop at nothing to achieve his goals. He’s certainly intimidating and has some creepy moments throughout the film, but he’s not quite terrifying enough to be considered a top-tier horror villain.
Riot is another symbiote who serves as Venom’s main antagonist in the film’s final act. While he’s definitely more physically imposing than Drake, he doesn’t quite have the personality or backstory to make him truly terrifying.
The Horror Elements
While Venom may not have an all-time great horror villain, it does contain plenty of elements that make it feel like a horror movie at times. Here are just a few examples:
- The symbiotes themselves are pretty creepy-looking, with their sharp teeth and slimy appearance.
- There are several scenes where characters are attacked by the symbiotes, which can be quite intense.
- There’s a fair amount of gore throughout the film, including some pretty graphic deaths.
So, is Venom considered a scary movie? While it may not be on par with some of the all-time greats in the horror genre, it certainly has plenty of scary moments and elements that make it worth watching for horror fans. If you’re looking for a film that will keep you on the edge of your seat, Venom is definitely worth checking out.
