The Star Wars franchise is one of the most beloved and iconic movie series of all time. The original trilogy, released between 1977 and 1983, followed the journey of Luke Skywalker as he fought against the evil Empire.
The prequel trilogy, released between 1999 and 2005, told the story of Anakin Skywalker’s fall to the dark side. The sequel trilogy, released between 2015 and 2019, introduced new characters like Rey, Finn, and Poe Dameron. But with the conclusion of the sequel trilogy came a question that many fans have been asking: is there going to be a ninth Star Wars movie?
What Happened in Star Wars: Episode IX – The Rise of Skywalker?
Before we answer that question, let’s take a quick look at what happened in the most recent Star Wars movie – Episode IX: The Rise of Skywalker. The movie picks up after the events of Episode VIII: The Last Jedi, with Rey continuing her training as a Jedi and Kylo Ren struggling with his connection to the dark side.
Throughout the course of the movie, our heroes face off against a resurrected Emperor Palpatine and his army of Sith troops. Along the way, they encounter old friends (like Lando Calrissian) and new allies (like Jannah).
In the end, Rey confronts Palpatine one-on-one while Kylo Ren fights against his Knights of Ren. Ultimately, Rey defeats Palpatine with help from all of the Jedi who have come before her – including Luke Skywalker and Leia Organa – while Kylo Ren sacrifices himself to save Rey.
Was Episode IX Meant to Be the End?
Given that Episode IX brought a conclusion to so many different character arcs and storylines from throughout all three trilogies, it’s natural to wonder if it was meant to be an ending for the entire Star Wars franchise. And indeed, in the lead-up to the movie’s release, many interviews with director J.J. Abrams and other members of the cast and crew suggested that this would be it for Star Wars on the big screen.
However, since then, there have been a few different indications that there might be more Star Wars movies in our future.
The Future of Star Wars Movies
For one thing, Lucasfilm – the production company behind all of the Star Wars movies – has announced that they are planning a new trilogy of films to be written and directed by Rian Johnson, who previously helmed Episode VIII: The Last Jedi. While we don’t know much about what these movies will entail or when they will be released, it seems safe to say that they will continue to explore the galaxy far, far away in new and exciting ways.
Additionally, Disney (which owns Lucasfilm) has announced plans for several new Star Wars TV shows on their streaming service Disney+. These include The Mandalorian (which has already aired two seasons), a series about Obi-Wan Kenobi (with Ewan McGregor reprising his role), and a show called Rangers of the New Republic. While these shows won’t be movies per se, they are still part of the larger Star Wars universe and could potentially introduce new characters or plot points that could lead to more movies down the line.
So Is There Going to Be a Ninth Movie?
All of this is to say: we don’t know! At this point in time, there has been no official announcement about whether or not there will be another Star Wars movie following Episode IX: The Rise of Skywalker. However, given how successful and beloved this franchise is – not to mention how many different avenues there are for storytelling within it – it seems unlikely that we’ve seen the last of Luke Skywalker’s galaxy.
In the meantime, fans can continue to enjoy all of the Star Wars content that is currently available – movies, TV shows, books, comics, video games, and more. Whether or not there is a ninth movie in our future, there is no shortage of exciting adventures to be had in this rich and imaginative universe.
